The Alaka`ina Foundation Family of Companies (FOCs) has a potential need for a Animal Healthcare Technician to support the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and their activities that focus on care and maintenance of animals and the facilities in support of research programs to also include animal husbandry. This position requires onsite support located in Research Triangle Park (RTC), NC.
Responsible for all activities required for the proper care and maintenance of animals (rodents, rabbits, and aquatics).
Perform routine animal husbandry procedures.
Perform daily health observations.
Report abnormal health or environmental conditions to supervisory staff.
Perform prescribed treatments on animals.
Restrain, handle, and manipulate animals.
Perform technical procedures as required which can include injections, blood draws, sample collection, necropsy, euthanasia, surgery support, anesthesia, protocol support, etc.
Maintain animal health records and documents.
Maintain or assist with the animal health surveillance/sentinel program.
Prepare and submit required written records, charts, logs, and inventories and other contract deliverables.
Maintain surgical equipment and procedure space.
Maintain a broad general knowledge and competence in lab animal science husbandry, terminology, technical procedures, policies and site SOPs.
Perform other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
Prefer 3 years of rodent and rabbit husbandry and health as well as aquatics system experience.
Be able to lift 23 kg and have physical strength and muscular coordination necessary for repetitive kneeling, bending, prolonged walking and/or standing, as well as ability to move large carts, animal cages and accessories to and from animal rooms and cage washing area.
Have physical and psychological capabilities for working around and accept exposure to animal odors, excreta, dander, and possible exposure to zoonotic disease.
Be willing to work in areas of above normal heat, noise and humidity (i.e., cage-washing areas for prolonged periods).
Possess computer proficiency and strong organizational and record-keeping skills.
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATIONS:
B.S. degree in Animal Science or related field preferred.
Minimum of AALAS ALAT certification (copy of certification required) or licensed veterinary technician.
CITIZENSHIP AND CLEARANCE:
Must pass a government background investigation (NAC), employment physical and drug/alcohol screening.
