JOB DESCRIPTION Develop and implement specialized recreation therapy services to patient-inmates. Such therapeutic interventions are designed to promote social interaction, to encourage beneficial and appropriate utilization of leisure time, and to provide patient-inmates with preparation for reentry into general population or other levels of treatment. Participate in the Interdisciplinary Treatment Team (IDTT) and coordinate services with primary clinicians, correctional counselors and other custody personnel. Evaluate recreation therapy needs for patient-inmates with particular attention to activities of daily living, communication skills, physical exercise, and positive coping strategies. Develop individual treatment plans within scope of practice for recreational therapy. Lead, instruct, monitor and encourage patient-inmates in a program of individual and group activities of a physical, social and cultural nature, which was designed to promote recovery and wellness. Assess and monitor patient-inmate behavior on an ongoing basis in order to report significant change in behavior or mental health symptoms which may require mental health intervention or modification of the individual treatment plan. Participate in the IDTT as a specialist in therapeutic recreation, provide input regarding specialized programs and services for specific patient-inmates which promote mental health and physical well-being; encourage and promote social interaction and encourage the development of optimal levels of functioning. The recreation therapist is to provide professional services using recognized therapeutic techniques while working toward these treatment goals with groups and individuals. Design and maintain a written recreation activity schedule for identified patient-inmates. Provide appropriate documentation in the Electronic Unit Health Record. Documentation shall include, but is not limited to the following: therapeutic recreation- related input into the initial Mental Health Evaluation and the treatment plan, professionally written, succinct progress notes related to the provision of professional services within scope of practice, reports to the Interdisciplinary Treatment Team, and discharge notes. Maintain confidentiality in compliance with federal and CA civil codes related to both patient-inmate communication and documentation. Maintain security of work areas and work materials/equipment at all times. Provide relevant and appropriate training associated with the special recreational needs of mentally, physically, and developmentally disabled patient-inmates to non-clinical staff who interact with inmate-patients, such as custody officers, teachers, and work supervisors. Maintain knowledge of theory and practice of mental health and recreational therapy needs of mentally, physically and developmentally disabled patient-inmates. Assess patient-inmates' capabilities, limitations, and/or observed behaviors, and provide appropriate therapeutic recreation intervention when clinically indicated. JOB REQUIREMENTSRecreation Therapist shall possess and maintain, throughout the term of this Agreement, current certification as a Recreation Therapist by either the California Board of Recreation and Park Certification, Inc. or the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certifications, Inc.Must have a minimum of twelve (12) continuous months of experience within the last three (3) years performing services similar in scope to those defined herein, in a public or private institution. Patient-inmate/youth health care is of paramount importance. Accuracy in communications is critical to ensure timely, correct care is provided. Must be able to speak, understand oral and written communication and write effectively in the English language.
